| HISTORY OF THE CLUB |
The club was founded by Kevin Smith (of Mullaloo) and Keith McRoberts (of Heathridge) who left Whitfords Junior Football Club at the end of the 1979 season to provide the boys in our area with the opportunity to play football.
The Club was originally named "Heathridge-Mullaloo Junior Football Club" in its inaugural year, 1980, but the name "Ocean Ridge Junior Football Club was adopted after the then Shire of Wanneroo formed a Recreation Association for the immediate area using the first name of the suburb OCEAN Reef and the last part of the suburb HeathRIDGE. The Club emblem is the SHARK.
In its first season the Club had 4 teams coached by Keith McRoberts, Kevin Smith, Graeme Curtis and Bob Dook. Dave Smith was also a foundation member and the team manager for Bob Dook's team in 1980. The Club Participated in their first lot of Grand Finals in 1982 in the West Perth zone and three sides (11's, 12's and 14's) made the Grand Finals, all unfortunately lost by less than a goal.
The Club's first State School Boy was Darren Cutten who went on to play Subiaco colts. Damien Read represented his state at Teal Cup level, and played League football at Subiaco and East Perth, and Mark Pearson, who also played State School Boys then to West Perth and currently at Claremont. Brendan Meikle did State School Boys and West Perth colts. Other ex-Ocean Ridge players who have played or are still playing are Jarrad Schofield who played at West Coast Eagles, Port Adelaide and currently at Subiaco, Wade Skipper at Western Bulldogs, Stephen Trewhella, Bjorn Stokke, Mitch Leithead, Anthony Tsalikis and Troy Skilton at West Perth and many more of our members are coming up through the system.
Our CLUBROOMS were built in 1991 after a long period of fund-raising and negotiations with the then City of Wanneroo. They were built in alliance with the Ocean Ridge Senior Cricket Club who have the tenancy during the summer months. We have purchased a Projector incorporating TV, DVD and sound systems and a trophy cabinet. Teams are encouraged to hold players' teas or other functions in the Clubrooms.
SPONSORSHIP was introduced to the Club in 1982. One of the original sponsor was Geoff Kemp who was working for Hoover at the time. Other major sponsors over the years have been Tony's Cycles, CRA, Town & Country, T & J Booton Upholsters. |
